Training Description: Join Motivational Interviewing (MI) expert and Recovery Coach Academy trainer Christian Smith for the next level of Motivational Interviewing training. Motivational Interviewing provides an atmosphere of collaboration, radical acceptance, and compassion with the ultimate goal of empowering clients in their own lives. The focus of this intermediate motivational interviewing training will be on deepening your understanding and practice of Motivational Interviewing, taking your skills to a higher level. We will also discuss listening for change talk, and how to work with a client when you get stuck.

Recovery Coaches who have already gone through the Vermont Recovery Coach Academy will benefit from this interactive, skill-building workshop. This refresher will provide participants with an understanding of what comprises a solid MI practice and hone in on the skills necessary to deepen compassionate conversations. 

Learning Objectives:

• Review the spirit of MI
• Focus on deepening the skills of complex reflections
• Develop skills on how to listen for change talk
• Use MI skills to navigate difficult conversations

About the Trainer

Christian Smith (he/him/his), a Psychiatric Social Worker at UMass Amherst’s Center for Counseling and Psychological Health, practices an evidence-based model: Motivational Interviewing. It is a collaborative conversation to strengthen a person’s own motivation for and commitment to change. Motivational Interviewing has demonstrated results in work with behavior change. He has extensive experience helping people replace unwanted behaviors for long-lasting, fulfilling lifestyle changes.
