The Vermont Recovery Coach Academy is a comprehensive and relatable training that equips participants with the skills and resources vital to help those in recovery.Participants of the Vermont Recovery Coach Academy (VRCA) work or volunteer in recovery resources that serve Vermonters. VRCA graduates use this training in many different professional arenas. Most work for our state’s nationally renowned 12 Recovery Centers located in every corner of the state. Some work or volunteer at treatment centers or hospitals, others use their training in recovery resources such as housing, corrections, employment, youth and family services, harm reduction, or other areas of human service that support recovery. Teachings include intensive dynamic modules in:

Conversational Introduction to YOUTH THRIVE
Join us for this two hour workshop hosted by Matt Wolf, Senior Associate for Youth Empowerment at Vermont Afterschool Network.
Youth Thrive is both a research-informed framework on youth well-being and an action-oriented initiative to better support the healthy development of our youth individually and systemically. Using a coaching-style engagement model, Youth Thrive focuses on resilience development and promoting positive outcomes for youth. This workshop will take a conversational approach to exploring the Youth Thrive Protective & Promotive Factors. It will draw on the experiences of the participants, engaging them in understanding how they can implement these principles in their interactions with youth, youth providers, and youth programming.

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING with Steven Andrews
The Motivational Interviewing: Advancing the Practice Specialty Training offers experienced Recovery Coaches the opportunity to gain an in-depth and advanced MI training by an expert whose work intersects with the field of addiction and recovery.
Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based skill that is the #1 tool that Recovery Coaches in VT use with their clients to support them on their journey of recovery. During a series of weekly training sessions, a cohort of coaches will work directly with training and content expert, and SUD and MH advocate, Stephen R. Andrew, LCSW, LADC, CCS, MINT, and CEO of the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI). Stephen has been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since 2003 and was awarded the highest honor of “Certified” trainer by MINT in 2019. Through engaging and interactive training sessions with Stephen, coaches will expand, increase and refine their motivational interviewing practice.
Prerequisite of one year working in the field as a Recovery Coach.

Identities and Biases on the Road to Recovery
Join us for this 90 minute workshop hosted by Indra J. Acharya.
In this workshop we will delve into various concepts, including biases (both, implicit and explicit), stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. Through engaging activities we will examine how these biases manifest in our professional lives and the harm they can cause. The primary objective of this workshop is to assist participants in recognizing biases in personal, interpersonal, and systemic interactions, while also offering strategies to address them effectively.

Unpacking White Supremacy Culture: Its Manifestations in Our Work
Join us for this 90 minute workshop hosted by Indra J. Acharya.
In this workshop we will utilize the framework developed by Kenneth Jones and Tema Okun to investigate the components of white supremacy culture and its collective impact. Through self-reflection and real-world examples, we will closely examine the adverse effects of white supremacy culture and explore strategies to recognize and avoid these harmful practices in our pursuits. Workplace Aggression / Toxicity / Violence 101
This is the second of 5 trainings offered by Dr. Aron Steward, Chief of Psychology of the UVM Health Network and founder of ReallyBeU Health & Wellness Consulting.
This series will address the intersections of mental health, substance use, resilience and burnout. All trainings will analyze these intersections from a diversity, equity, and inclusion perspective.

This training examines the complex perspectives and experiences of Vermonters that fall into the “Older Adults” age group. We will examine cultural attitudes around wisdom, frailty, pride and independence and those norms may impact our own bias when interacting with people of a certain age.
Participants will also explore how common age-related health decline impacts learning and recovery as well as simple strategies to foster an inclusive coaching setting.

RCED – Recovery Coaches in the Emergency Department
The Recovery Coaches in the Emergency Department (RCED) program was established in 2018, with the goal of serving individuals presenting with substance use disorders in the Emergency Department. This program was created by establishing partnerships between the Vermont Department of Health, Vermont’s Recovery Centers, and their local hospitals. As of 2021, Recovery Coaches are now working in hospitals throughout the entire state of Vermont, providing resources and support to those in crisis when they need it most. Recovery Vermont is proud to provide these coaches their initial and ongoing training.
